Projects

BASE works with a variety of partners on a range of international and regional projects.

The project will focus on strengthening operations of three organizations dedicated to rural electrification  in Argentina, Nicaragua, and Brazil, and aims to add new revenue streams through new product introduction (e.g., lamps, improved stoves, water purification systems, etc.) and carbon finance. The analysis of strengthens and weaknesses of the organizations is also intended to help others learn from these experiences.

The SEFI Public Finance Alliance, or "SEF Alliance", is a member-driven coalition of public and publicly backed organisations that finance sustainable energy markets in various countries.  Members use this platform to exchange best practices, pool resources, launch joint projects, and assist other governments in establishing new or similar financing models.

BASE developed a capacity building program to raise the knowledge and skills of professionals within private financial institutions in order to help banks understand and assess the opportunities and risks, as well as to overcome perception barriers, associated with financing sustainable energy.

The project intends to demonstrate and develop an innovative business model that uses remittances as the financing mechanism to facilitate the purchase of small-scale renewable energy equipment for immigrants that are working in a developed country where the installation of the equipment would be in their country of origin.

 

By scaling investments in green technologies in emerging markets, the venture funds will demonstrate that competitive financial returns can be delivered in conjunction with having a meaningful environmental and social impact, aiming to scale up investments in climate change solutions in emerging market.

The BASE Investment Forum is a regularly held event that brings together key individuals from the finance community and the renewable energy and energy efficiency business.

Public Finance Mechanisms

BASE focuses on specialised finance mechanisms being employed by governments around the world, at local, regional, national and international levels, to fill targeted gaps in the financing of sustainable energy, catalyse private investment, and accelerate market uptake.  These include instruments such as incubator programmes, contingent grants, soft loans, mezzanine and equity funding, and guarantees.  This is the focus of two reports prepared jointly by BASE and UNEP, and it has underpinned the development of the SEFI Public Finance Alliance.

EMPRESS - Energy Management and Performance Related Energy Savings Scheme

EMPRESS promotes Monitoring and Targeting (M&T), an industrial energy management tool, in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Risk Management

This SEFI/GEF targeted research project examines existing instruments and approaches to financial risk management of renewable energy technologies and suggests potential modalities for new instruments that could be developed in partnership with private and public sector financial institutions.
